STRUCTURAL STEEL GRADE GUIDE
Selecting the correct grade ensures structural integrity, weldability, and compliance with the design code. This guide covers the most commonly specified grades for UAE and GCC projects.
Standard Mild Steel — General Structural
The most economical and widely available structural steel. Yield strength 275 MPa. JR sub-grade is impact tested at room temperature (20°C) — suitable for the UAE and GCC climate where sub-zero temperatures are not encountered. The default grade for non-critical structural frames, secondary steelwork, and general fabrication in the region.
Higher Strength — Primary Structural Use
355 MPa yield strength — 29% stronger than S275. Allows lighter sections for the same load, reducing steel tonnage and cost. J2 sub-grade is impact tested at –20°C. The preferred grade for primary structural steel in UAE oil & gas modules, offshore decks, large industrial buildings, and wherever structural efficiency matters. Matches ASTM A572 Gr.50 in strength.
Normalised + Low Temp Impact — Offshore & Heavy Lifting
Normalised (N) and impact tested at –50°C (L). Mandatory for offshore structural steel, jack-up legs, heavy-lift crane structures, and any application where improved toughness or sub-zero service is required. Available in plates and wide-flange sections. Also specified for structural members in cold storage facilities and LNG plants.
High Strength — Weight-Critical Structures
460 MPa yield strength with thermomechanical controlled process (TMCP / ML) rolling. Used where weight savings are critical — long-span bridges, offshore topsides, large crane booms, and deep-water modules. Higher cost per tonne than S355 but fewer tonnes required per structure. Requires careful welding procedure qualification.
US-Specification Projects
The standard US carbon structural steel grade (250 MPa yield, 400–550 MPa tensile). Required on US-specification EPC projects — US-designed oil & gas facilities, petrochemical plants to ASME design codes, and US government projects. Interchangeable with S275 in many applications. Full ASTM mill certification available from stock.
Abrasion Resistant — Mining & Industrial Wear
Quenched and tempered high-carbon steel plates with 370–470 Brinell hardness (AR400) or 470–540 BHN (AR500). Not a structural grade — used for liner plates, chutes, hoppers, bucket teeth, dredger cutterheads, and any surface subject to severe abrasive wear. Requires low hydrogen welding procedures and pre/post heat for successful fabrication.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN S275 AND S355 STRUCTURAL STEEL?
S275 has a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa and is the standard, most economical structural steel grade — suitable for non-critical secondary steelwork, miscellaneous frames, and general fabrication where ultimate economy is the priority.
S355 has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa — approximately 29% higher than S275. This higher strength allows engineers to use lighter (thinner / smaller) sections for the same applied load, which typically results in a lower overall steel tonnage and cost for primary structural frames, even though S355 costs slightly more per tonne. S355 is the preferred grade for primary structural steel in oil & gas, offshore, heavy industrial, and large-span construction in the UAE. Both grades have comparable weldability — standard welding procedures apply to both.
WHAT DOES THE SUB-GRADE (JR, J0, J2, NL) MEAN IN EN 10025 STEEL?
The sub-grade letter code in EN 10025 indicates the Charpy impact test temperature — i.e. the temperature at which the steel is guaranteed to absorb at least 27 Joules without brittle fracture:
JR — impact tested at +20°C (room temperature). Suitable for the UAE climate where temperatures don't fall below 5–10°C. The most economical sub-grade.
J0 — impact tested at 0°C.
J2 — impact tested at –20°C. Specified for structures exposed to cold environments or where the design code requires improved fracture toughness.
N / NL — normalised rolling; NL is impact tested at –50°C. Required for offshore structures, Arctic applications, and crane/lifting structures where extreme toughness is mandatory.
For most UAE onshore applications, JR is technically sufficient. For offshore, heavy-lift, or crane structures, J2 or NL is typically specified by the structural engineer.
CAN YOU SUPPLY STRUCTURAL STEEL TO ASTM A36 AND A572 SPECIFICATIONS?
Yes — Metal Junction FZE stocks and supplies ASTM A36, A572 Grade 42/50/60/65, and ASTM A992 structural steel in plates, beams, angles, channels, and bars. ASTM grades are required on US-specification EPC projects, on facilities designed to ASME codes, on US government-funded infrastructure projects, and on many Saudi Aramco projects. We supply full ASTM mill certifications with each order. Contact our team specifying your ASTM grade, section, size, and quantity for a same-day quote.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOT-FORMED (EN 10210) AND COLD-FORMED (EN 10219) HOLLOW SECTIONS?
Hot-formed hollow sections (EN 10210) are manufactured at high temperature (above the recrystallisation temperature of steel), which relieves residual stresses and gives a more uniform microstructure. They have tighter dimensional tolerances, smaller corner radii (better for welding), and can be supplied in higher-strength grades (S355, S420, S460). They are the preferred choice for structural columns, primary frames, and applications where weld quality at corners is important.
Cold-formed hollow sections (EN 10219) are formed at room temperature from flat-rolled coil. They are typically more economical in thinner gauges (up to 12.5mm wall) and are widely available for secondary structural use. Cold forming introduces residual stresses, and corner radii are slightly larger — this matters for tight fillet welds. For most general construction and fabrication applications in the UAE, EN 10219 cold-formed sections are perfectly adequate and represent better value.
DO YOU SUPPLY STEEL PLATES CUT TO SIZE FOR FABRICATION SHOPS IN UAE?
Yes. Metal Junction FZE supplies cut-to-size steel plates for steel fabricators, machine shops, and EPC contractors across the UAE. We offer plasma and oxy-fuel flame cutting from stock plates to your dimensions — profiles, rectangles, or complex shapes from CAD / DXF files. Standard stock sizes are 1000×2000mm to 3000×12000mm in thicknesses from 3mm to 200mm. Shot blasting to Sa 2.5 and primer coat can be applied after cutting. Lead times depend on grade and thickness — contact us with your cutting list for a prompt quote.
CAN YOU SUPPLY STRUCTURAL STEEL WITH EMIRATES STEEL DOCUMENTATION?
Yes. Metal Junction FZE sources structural steel from Emirates Steel (Abu Dhabi) and Hadeed / Rajhi Steel (Saudi Arabia) as well as European mills (ArcelorMittal) and Indian mills (SAIL, JSW, JSPL, Tata Steel). For projects requiring UAE-origin steel — such as ADNOC projects with in-country value (ICV) requirements — we can supply with full Emirates Steel mill documentation.
