Valve Body Materials Guide
Selecting the correct valve body and trim material is critical to valve performance and service life. The guide below covers the most common material selections for UAE and GCC industrial applications.
Carbon Steel (A216 WCB / A105)
The standard choice for most oil & gas, refinery, and process applications at temperatures from -29°C to +425°C. Cost-effective, widely available, strong. Not suitable for corrosive or low-temperature cryogenic service.
Low-Temp Carbon Steel (A352 LCC / A350 LF2)
Impact-tested carbon steel for service down to -46°C. Used in LNG, refrigeration, and low-temperature gas processing applications where standard WCB would become brittle.
Stainless Steel 316 / CF8M
Excellent corrosion resistance for seawater, chloride-containing fluids, chemical service, and food & pharma applications. Service range -196°C to +538°C. Higher cost than carbon steel.
Chrome-Moly Alloy Steel (WC6 / WC9 / C5)
A217 WC6 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo) and WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo) for elevated temperature service in steam, power, and high-temp refinery service (up to 593°C). Used widely in Saudi Aramco and ADNOC power and refinery projects.
Duplex Stainless Steel (A995 4A / CD3MN)
Excellent for offshore, seawater, and high-chloride environments where standard 316L is insufficient. PREN >35. Superior strength allows thinner walls and lighter valves than austenitic SS.
Nickel Alloy (Inconel / Hastelloy / Monel)
For extreme corrosion resistance: Hastelloy C276 for reducing acids and oxidising media; Inconel 625/718 for H₂S sour service and very high temperature; Monel 400 for HF acid and seawater.

Frequently Asked Questions
Key questions from procurement engineers and project managers sourcing industrial valves in the UAE.
What is the difference between API 600 and API 6D gate valves?
API 600 is the standard for bolted-bonnet cast steel gate valves used in refinery and process plant service — it focuses on design, materials, dimensions, and testing for cast valves typically specified by class (150# to 2500#). It is the most common gate valve standard in refineries and petrochemical plants.
API 6D is the standard for pipeline valves — including gate, ball, plug, and check valves — specifically for petroleum and natural gas transmission pipelines. API 6D gate valves are typically slab-gate or through-conduit types designed for mainline isolation and pigging operations. If your project is a refinery, specify API 600. If it's a transmission pipeline, specify API 6D.
What is the difference between a floating ball valve and a trunnion-mounted ball valve?
In a floating ball valve, the ball is held in place only by the two seat rings and is free to float slightly, creating a line-contact seal. Floating designs are used in smaller sizes (typically up to NPS 8") and lower pressure classes where the fluid pressure can push the ball against the downstream seat to achieve a seal. They are lower cost and suitable for general service.
In a trunnion-mounted ball valve, the ball is mechanically anchored (trunnioned) top and bottom with separate trunnion bearings — the seats are spring-loaded to maintain contact with the ball. This design is used for large sizes (2" and above) and higher pressures where the fluid force on a floating ball would require excessive operating torque. Trunnion valves can also incorporate double-block-and-bleed (DBB) functionality and are standard for mainline pipeline valves.
What does NACE MR0175 compliance mean for valves?
NACE MR0175 (now ISO 15156) specifies material requirements for equipment used in oil & gas production environments containing hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) — commonly called "sour service". Exposure to H₂S can cause sulphide stress cracking (SSC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) in susceptible materials, leading to sudden failure even at stresses below yield strength.
NACE-compliant valves have controlled hardness levels (typically ≤22 HRC for carbon steel), specified heat treatment, and sometimes additional impact testing. For any application in a sour gas environment, always specify NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance — we supply these as standard for applicable projects across the UAE and Middle East.
Do you supply fire-safe valves?
Yes. We supply fire-safe-tested valves to API 607 (for quarter-turn valves — ball, butterfly, plug) and API 6FA (for valves in general). Fire-safe valves are designed to maintain pressure containment after exposure to fire, preventing catastrophic leakage of hydrocarbon fluids during a fire event. Fire-safe testing verifies that the valve will not leak excessively during and immediately after a fire at a specified temperature and duration. Fire-safe valves are mandatory for many oil & gas, refinery, and offshore applications and are specified in ADNOC, Saudi Aramco, and PDO engineering standards.
Can you supply valves with pneumatic or electric actuators?
Yes. Metal Junction FZE supplies complete valve-actuator assemblies, factory-assembled and tested. We supply pneumatic scotch-yoke and piston actuators (spring return for fail-safe operation), electric motor-operated valve (MOV) actuators in all voltages (24VDC, 110V, 220V, 415V AC), and hydraulic actuators for large-bore and subsea applications. We also supply smart positioners (HART, FF, Profibus), limit switches, solenoid valves, and local control panels as part of an integrated valve control package. ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 certified actuators available.
What documentation do you provide with valve orders?
Every valve order includes: manufacturer's inspection and test record (ITR) / hydrotest certificate to API 598; material test certificate (MTC) for body, trim, and bolting; API monogram certificate (where applicable); dimensional inspection report; surface treatment and coating record; packing and preservation certificate; and packing list with tag numbers. We also supply third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, or your nominated inspector on request, and can provide NACE compliance certificates, fire-safe test certificates, and fugitive emissions (API 624 / ISO 15848-1) certification for applicable valves.
What is your delivery lead time for valves in the UAE?
Lead times depend on valve type, size, pressure class, material, and quantity. Standard carbon steel gate and ball valves in Class 150–600 in common sizes can often be supplied from our UAE stock within 1–2 weeks. Special materials (duplex, super duplex, alloy steel), high-pressure classes (Class 900+), or large-diameter valves typically require 8–20 weeks manufacturing lead time. Actuated valve assemblies add 4–8 weeks for assembly and factory acceptance testing. We provide firm delivery commitments with every order — contact us with your requirement for a specific delivery estimate.
