Butt Weld Fittings

Forged Steel Fittings
High-strength fittings for small-bore, high-pressure applications. Manufactured from solid forged bar — no casting porosity. Available in socket weld and threaded (NPT) ends.
Socket Weld Fittings

Butt Weld Fittings — Types, Sizes & Standards
Butt weld fittings (ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43) are manufactured in seamless and welded construction and are available in all standard pipe schedules. They are the preferred connection method for NPS 2" and above in oil & gas, refinery, and high-pressure industrial piping systems.

Factory-Made Wrought Butt Welding Fittings. The primary dimensional standard for all butt weld fittings — elbows, tees, reducers, caps, stub ends — NPS ½" to 72".
Forged Fittings — Socket Welding and Threaded. Covers all socket weld and threaded fittings in Class 2000, 3000, 6000, and 9000. NPS ½" to 4".
Wrought Steel Butt Welding Short Radius Elbows and Returns. Covers short-radius (1D) elbows and 180° return bends where space constraints apply.
Wrought and Fabricated Butt Welding Fittings for Low-Pressure / Corrosion-Resistant Applications. Covers stainless steel fittings in schedule 5S and 10S.

Selecting the wrong fitting material is a common and costly error. This guide covers the most-specified fitting material grades for UAE and GCC industrial projects.
ASTM A234 WPB (Carbon Steel)
The workhorse of the industry — standard grade for most oil & gas, refinery, process, and construction butt weld fittings in moderate temperature service (–29°C to +425°C). Cost-effective, widely stocked, full ASTM compliance. Equivalent forged grade: ASTM A105N for socket weld and threaded.
ASTM A403 WP316L (Stainless Steel)
The premium stainless grade for corrosive service — chloride environments, offshore piping, chemical injection, desalination, and pharma/food applications. The "L" grade (low carbon) prevents sensitisation during welding. Equivalent forged grade: ASTM A182 F316L.
ASTM A860 WPHY65/70 (High-Yield CS)
High-strength wrought carbon steel fittings for use with API 5L X65/X70 PSL2 line pipe. Specified for gas transmission pipelines operating at high design factors where weight and wall thickness savings are critical. Equivalent forged: ASTM A694 F65/F70.
ASTM A234 WP11 / WP22 (Alloy Steel)
Chrome-moly alloy steel butt weld fittings for high-temperature service — WP11 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo, up to 540°C) and WP22 (2.25Cr-1Mo, up to 580°C). Mandatory for power plant boiler piping, HRSG, and refinery high-temperature circuits. Forged equivalent: ASTM A182 F11 and F22.
ASTM A815 WPS31803 (Duplex 2205)
Duplex stainless steel fittings for offshore, seawater, and corrosive service where 316L is insufficient. Twice the strength of austenitic SS, PREN >35, excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance in chloride environments. Forged equivalent: ASTM A182 F51. Super duplex (S32750/F53) available for higher-severity applications.
ASTM A420 WPL6 (Low-Temperature CS)
Carbon steel fittings impact-tested to –46°C for LNG, refrigeration, and cryogenic service. When service temperatures are below –29°C, standard WPB will become brittle — WPL6 must be specified. Companion to ASTM A333 Gr. 6 pipe. Forged equivalent: ASTM A350 LF2.

Bevelling & End Prep
30° weld-prep bevel to ASME B16.25 on all butt weld fittings — standard on orders. Ensures correct weld fit-up and eliminates on-site grinding and preparation time.
Heat Treatment
Normalising, annealing, stress relieving, and PWHT through our approved partners. Required for alloy steel (P11/P22/P91) fittings and post-weld stress relief in petrochemical service.
Positive Material Identification (PMI)
XRF-based PMI testing for chemical composition verification of all alloy, stainless, duplex, and nickel alloy fittings. Critical for ADNOC, Aramco, and PDO project compliance.
Coating & Surface Treatment
Cold zinc, epoxy, FBE, and hot-dip galvanising for external corrosion protection. Internal epoxy or cement lining available for water service fittings on request.
Third-Party Inspection

What is the difference between butt weld fittings and forged fittings?
Butt weld (BW) fittings — covered by ASME B16.9 — are used for NPS 2" and above (though available from ½") and are welded end-to-end directly into the pipeline. They are available in both seamless and welded construction and can be ordered in any pipe schedule (SCH 10 to XXS). Use a reducing tee when the branch is 50% or more of the header diameter — for example, a 6" header with a 4" branch. Use a weldolet when the branch is less than 50% of the header, or when you need a high-integrity butt weld branch connection on a large-bore header. What is the difference between seamless and welded butt weld fittings?
Seamless fittings are manufactured from solid round bar or seamless pipe — they have no weld seam and uniform wall thickness throughout. They are more expensive but are mandatory for high-pressure, high-temperature, and sour service (NACE MR0175) applications where weld integrity cannot be assumed.
Welded (fabricated) fittings are formed from plate or welded pipe, typically used for large diameter fittings (NPS 16" and above) and lower-pressure applications. They are lower cost and have shorter lead times for large sizes. For most oil & gas process piping in the UAE, SCH 40 and above butt weld fittings are specified seamless in sizes up to NPS 12"–16"; larger sizes are typically fabricated welded with 100% weld radiography.
What does WPB mean in ASTM A234 WPB?
In ASTM A234 WPB, "WP" stands for Wrought Piping — confirming the fitting is made from wrought material (not cast), and "B" is the grade designation indicating the minimum tensile strength (60 ksi / 415 MPa) and yield strength (35 ksi / 240 MPa). ASTM A234 also covers grades WPC (higher strength) and WP1, WP11, WP22, WP91 for alloy steel fittings. For most standard oil & gas, construction, and process piping at moderate temperatures, WPB is the correct specification.
