Frequently Asked Questions
Key questions from engineers and procurement teams sourcing non-ferrous and specialty metals in the UAE.
What aluminium alloy should I use for a marine or offshore application in the UAE?
For marine hull plates, offshore deck plating, and any structural application in direct contact with seawater or salt spray, 5083-H116 is the standard choice. It has a minimum PREN (pitting resistance equivalent) of 29 and essentially zero corrosion rate in seawater at ambient temperatures. The H116 temper is specifically designed for marine service — it is resistant to exfoliation and intergranular corrosion even after long-term seawater exposure.
For structural extrusions (angles, channels, hollow sections) in the same marine environment, 6061-T6 is the standard — it has higher strength than the 5xxx series and is the workhorse structural alloy for topsides, walkways, handrails, and framing. If the structure is purely architectural (curtain wall, fenestration, handrails for buildings), 6063-T5/T6 is preferred for its superior anodising surface quality and dimensional accuracy.
What is the difference between 90/10 and 70/30 cupronickel, and which should I use?
90/10 Cupronickel (C70600 / CuNi10Fe1Mn) — 90% copper, 10% nickel — is the most widely used grade for seawater service piping in the UAE. It provides excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, biofouling, and impingement at moderate flow velocities (up to ~3m/s). It is the standard for offshore and marine firefighting mains, seawater cooling lines, and desalination evaporator tubes. Lower cost than 70/30.
70/30 Cupronickel (C71500 / CuNi30Mn1Fe) — 70% copper, 30% nickel — has higher strength, better resistance to higher-velocity seawater (up to ~4.5m/s), and better resistance to corrosion in polluted or stagnant seawater. It is specified for naval condenser tubes, high-pressure seawater piping, and applications where 90/10 has shown velocity erosion. 70/30 costs approximately 40–50% more than 90/10.
For most UAE desalination and offshore seawater cooling applications at normal service velocities, 90/10 is the correct and more economical choice.
When should I specify Inconel 625 vs duplex stainless steel for offshore piping?
Duplex 2205 (F51) is sufficient for the vast majority of offshore seawater and process applications — it offers excellent chloride resistance (PREN >35), high strength, and good weldability at a fraction of the cost of Inconel 625. It is the standard for offshore topsides piping, seawater injection, and chemical injection lines in sweet service.
Inconel 625 is required when: (1) the service involves H₂S sour gas at concentrations or temperatures where duplex would fail NACE MR0175 limits; (2) the service involves very aggressive chemical injection (methanol, scale inhibitor at high concentration); (3) the operating temperature is above 316°C (the upper limit of duplex); (4) the design life requirement demands zero corrosion allowance in deepwater subsea umbilicals or flexible risers. Inconel 625 costs 8–12× more than duplex 2205 in most product forms, so the specification must be justified by service conditions.
Do you supply aluminium with Dubai Municipality / ADNOC approved certifications?
Yes. Metal Junction FZE supplies aluminium products from mills approved for UAE construction and oil & gas projects. For ADNOC and Abu Dhabi projects, we work with mills on the ADNOC Approved Vendors List (AVL) and can provide full manufacturer documentation, EN 10204 3.1 MTCs, and Dubai Municipality compliance documentation for structural aluminium extrusions and plates. For specific project AVL requirements, contact our technical team with the project name and operator specification number — we will confirm mill qualification status and lead times.
What is the difference between Type K, Type L, and Type M copper tube?
All three types have the same outside diameter for a given nominal size (so they fit the same fittings), but differ in wall thickness and therefore pressure rating and application:
Type K — heaviest wall, highest pressure rating. Specified for underground water service, medical gas piping, and applications where maximum durability is needed.
Type L — medium wall. The most common specification for general plumbing, HVAC, and hot & cold water supply in commercial buildings. Suitable for most UAE building services applications.
Type M — lightest wall, lowest pressure rating. Used for domestic hot water heating and drain lines where pressures are low. Not suitable for gas service.
For most commercial and industrial plumbing in the UAE, Type L to ASTM B88 or EN 1057 is the standard specification.
Can you supply Hastelloy C-276 pipe and fittings with full NACE MR0175 compliance?
Yes. Metal Junction FZE supplies Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) seamless and welded pipes (ASTM B619/B622), fittings (ASTM B366), flanges (ASTM B564), and plate (ASTM B575) with full EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates. For NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance, the Hastelloy C-276 chemical composition inherently meets the requirements for materials resistant to sulphide stress cracking (SSC) in H₂S environments — and we can provide supporting documentation confirming compliance. Full chemical analysis, mechanical test results, heat treatment records, and dimensional inspection available with each order. Third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek can be arranged on request.
